Children's Mental Health Week 2026

This years theme is This is My Place. Its all about feeling like you belong.

Belonging isn't a nice-to-have. Feeling like you belong is a fundamental psychological and emotional need.

And when we are thinking about schools, its important to remember that before a child can learn anything, their brain is asking one question:

Am I safe here?

Safety = Am I welcome? Do I matter? Can I be myself?

To truly feel like you belong you need to feel a part of something, like your voice and opinions matter, and that you are welcome- just as you are.

Things that help children feel like they belong

♥︎ Feeling part of a physical space
Seeing themselves reflected in their environment; a photo on the wall, being able to choose where something goes, or having items nearby that feel familiar and safe.

♥︎ Safe, positive relationships
Friendships, trusted adults, and people who help them feel secure, understood and supported.

♥︎ Inclusion and representation
Being around others they can relate to, and being in spaces that feel welcoming, accessible and accepting.

♥︎ Ownership and autonomy
Knowing their voice matters; that they are listened to, respected, and allowed to share their thoughts, feelings and choices. Having small responsibilities that help them feel valued.

♥︎ Most of all... knowing they can truly be who they are without having to hide parts of themselves

Free Activity

I’ve created a little activity you can do together at home to explore what helps your child feel like they have their place 🫶

You can use it to gently open up conversations about what makes them who they are (and how to protect that), the tools that help them feel safe and connected, and how they can help others feel like they belong too.
